"you is kind, you is smart, you important" (with trauma, can we hear this message?)

lisapedersenla

Viola Davis playing Aibileen in the movie "The Help" has really influenced how I practice as a therapist. She said to the little girl in her nanny role, "You is kind. You is smart. You is important." Think about it: If we all had those words constantly said to us in the manner that Aibileen said them, we'd be smiling down as the sun does from above. I can have all the great knowledge in the world, but if my client can't relate to that knowledge, then how can this client progress in treatment? So, I use stories to help explain this knowledge of mental health treatment. I use stories from books or movies like The Help and stories from current-day life to help my clients grow. I'm excited to share with you in order for you to see the power in them. I will continue to practice like Aibileen does.
