are you a therapist that needs help with a client? totally normal & I'm here for you!
Please consider reaching out for help if you get stuck with framing goals for your client and to carve out a way to assess if your client is progressing in treatment with you.
When I first started as a therapist I used to write as a goal: "The client will decrease depression." But, how? How do we know if the client's depression has decreased? For example, instead of "decreasing depression," you could set a goal such as "the client will report feeling more positive emotions than negative emotions during more than half of the days during the week." This way, you and your client can track progress and adjust treatment as needed.
Let me know if you need any further assistance in refining your goals!
I've been practicing as a therapist since 1996. The last 3.5 I worked part time at a large health maintenance organization and one of my roles was to champion how a therapist creates goals. I live and breathe this stuff!
